Enhancing Household Nutrition through a Nutrition Garden

In many rural areas, limited access to fresh and nutritious vegetables remains a major challenge. Most households rely on purchasing vegetables from the market, which increases household expenses and limits dietary diversity.

Under the HDFC Bank Parivartan – Holistic Rural Development Programme (HRDP), efforts are being made to improve the nutritional status and livelihoods of rural families by promoting Nutrition Gardens at the household level.

As part of this initiative, Mrs. Satyabai Dhruv from Gaurghat village was encouraged and supported to establish a nutrition garden near her home. The HRDP team provided technical guidance and motivation to help her develop and manage the garden effectively.

Pre-Intervention Challenges

Before the intervention, the family faced several challenges:

  • Vegetables were not regularly available in the household.
  • Most vegetables had to be purchased from the market.
  • This increased the family’s monthly expenditure.
  • The family’s diet lacked diversity and balanced nutrition.
  • Available land near the house was not being used productively.

As a result, maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet for the family was difficult.

Key interventions included:

Scientific Sowing Methods
She was encouraged to adopt the line sowing method, which ensures proper spacing between plants and promotes better crop growth.

Seed Treatment
Training was provided on treating seeds with Carbendazim fungicide before sowing to protect crops from seed-borne and soil-borne diseases.

Crop Diversification
She was guided to cultivate a variety of vegetables throughout the year to ensure continuous availability of nutritious food for the family.

Results and Impact

The establishment of the nutrition garden brought several positive changes to the household:

  • Year-round availability of fresh and nutritious vegetables
  • Reduction in household expenditure on vegetables
  • Improved dietary diversity and balanced nutrition
  • Better health and nutritional status of family members
  • Possibility of earning additional income through surplus produce

Conclusion

The nutrition garden established by Mrs. Satyabai Dhruv is a successful example of how scientific agricultural practices promoted under the HRDP programme can improve household nutrition and livelihoods.

This initiative not only ensures nutrition security for the family but also encourages self-reliance and sustainable rural development. If more rural households adopt nutrition gardens, it can significantly improve community health, nutrition, and economic stability.
